Game, Set, Match: High Summer Style at Wimbleton

Tennis is the perennial game of summer - and no one does tennis better than the English, specifically at Wimbledon. British tennis culture today reminds me of the jousting culture of the past - it’s classy, stamina-based, and attracts the young and handsome to the court side seats. The Wimbledon Championships also hit at the perfect low point of summer (where everyone just wants to siesta and wake up in September), and provides the perfect preppy jolt to our sartorial consciousness. Let’s revisit this years best court side looks!

Sienna Miller

The best look of Wimbledon ‘23 in my opinion, Sienna Miller in Ralph Lauren. What’s so fabulous about this look is the easy-ness of it, and the flattering chambray blue pinstripe. A happy smile is also the best accessory!

Jonathan Bailey & Ariana Grande

This pale beige tonal look on Jonathan Bailey from Ralph Lauren is just perfection. This shade of white-beige is one of the most flattering colors for both genders, but especially in tailored menswear. I find myself advising clients again & again to tend towards a warm-white like this shade of beige for summertime, as it flatters your skin tone and isn’t as high maintenence as white.

Minor critique - the pants have been cut too slim, but otherwise perfection.

Catharine, Princess of Wales

I really loved this look on the Princess of Wales by Roland Mouret. This was her first year as official royal patron of the Wimbledon Championships, so it felt fitting for her to wear something a little more professional to the Men’s Finals. The gorgeous wrap detail across the bodice also meant that all the court side “reaction shots” would still have sartorial interest. The layers of thought that have to go into really stellar styling!

Brad Pitt

Ah, Mr. Pitt, just an ordinary private citizen. No one has IDed what brand he wore to the Wimbledon Finals, and I doubt anyone will be able to. Brad Pitt famously doesn’t use a stylist, and buys his own clothes - and by the looks of this perfect sea-mist blue knit polo, this looks like a piece he’s had for a long time (and washed many times too). A testament to buying well, and using what you have.

Also - can we discuss how well this 59 year old has aged??? Incredibly good genes.

Tom Hiddleston & Zawe Ashton

Absolutely adore this complimentary couples styling by Ralph Lauren. Tom Hiddleston is a seasoned menswear dresser, but coordinating so perfectly with your partner is another level of expertise. Bravo all around! Anyone planning on an event with your partner, take notes.

On another note, Zawe recently gave birth to the couples first child, and this look was both flattering & forgiving - a very necessary dynamic postpartum!

Catharine, Princess of Wales

The Princess of Wales chose a softer tonal green look for the Womens Final, from Self-Portrait’s Pre-Fall collection. Self-Portrait specializes in these “business on top, delicate on the bottom” two-piece dresses, and the Princess love them! She typically deploys this style in situations where she wants to be more approachable but still professional. A great style to copy for work events or formal family events like graduations or ceremonies.

Roger Federer

The reigning king of tennis made an appearance on day 1 at Wimbledon alongside his wife Mirka. Federer opted for a tan cotton suit, paired with a dark navy stripe shirt & matching polka dot tie - a masterclass in summer menswear dressing.

A fun side note: did you notice the double pockets on one side of his coat? The top pocket is called a “ticket pocket” and goes back 2 centuries in British tailoring tradition.

Lily James

It is hard to overestimate the value of a good silk twinset. Lily James wore a black pinstripe twinset by Ralph Lauren (paired with a black blazer, London had a cold snap half way through Wimbledon), and looked simply perfect.

Daniel Craig & Rachel Weiss

007 looked quite the silver fox at the Men’s Finals. A trick frequently used by celebrity stylists is to pair a suit with tonal shirt underneath, to create a more even appearance. Here Mr. Craig has paired his light charcoal suit with a pale gray button down shirt, creating the perfect base for the gray-tone navy, white, olive varsity tie. The whole look is highly complimentary to his physical features. The one oddity is the rust red pocket square, it feels out of place in an otherwise gray tone ensemble - maybe a bit of spunky color-rebellion? Either way, it works.

Quick shot out to Rachel Weiss, for a simple cream look that suits her perfectly.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw MBE

Gugu Mbatha-Raw looked lovely in this broderie anglaise white dress. Broderie Anglaise is a type of highly ornate eyelet detail, that more closely resembles lace, but still has the durability of poplin. Such a lovely breathable summer option!
