My Style Philosophy
Classic. Interesting. Sophisticated. Easy.
I recognize that this sounds contradictory.
But I suppose that IS my style ethos - I don’t feel that classic and interesting are two different things, but rather two sides of the same coin. 2 dimensional. The most interesting people are the multifaceted ones, the ones that keep you watching as each new side of their personality catches the light. Why should fashion - the art form that most closely models itself on humanity - not excite you while also feeling reassuringly grounded???
I love this photo taken in 1988 by celebrated fashion photographer, Peter Lindbergh, of some of the great supermodels (as they would be termed by the press) of the 90s. It was early in his career & in theirs - Peter wanted to show women, not as the done-up society dolls of the past - but as living, breathing, relaxed, fun-loving WOMEN. This was revolutionary at the time - a new wave of fresh perspective rushing over society.
If you notice what the models are wearing, they are simply wearing collared shirts - the simplest of looks from a fashion perspective. Unimpeachably classic, stolen from the mens wardrobe and reimagined on the female frame. On a woman, the button down takes on an easy nonchalance - an interesting contradiction from it origins as the garment of buttoned up men of business. And yet even in its most casual iterations the button down shirt remains a quiet symbol of sophistication, of polish and formal intent. An example of the democratization of class, free of allegiance to any brand name or designer.
This is my style philosophy - to remain timeless, but to not be afraid to reimagine, and always tailor my style to the moment I am living in and not the other way around.
